Nine Providence Catholic athletes commit across divisions for collegiate sports

Nine student-athletes from Providence Catholic High School have announced their commitments to continue playing sports at the collegiate level, according to Athletic Director Doug Ternik. The group includes four athletes moving on to Division I programs, two to Division II, one to Division III, and two who will compete at junior colleges.

“We’re incredibly proud of these nine student-athletes and all they’ve accomplished during their time at Providence Catholic,” said Athletic Director Doug Ternik. “Their commitment to excellence -both in the classroom and in competition – truly embodies what it means to be a Celtic. We look forward to watching them continue their academic and athletic journeys at the next level.”

Abbey Knight of New Lenox has accepted a full-ride scholarship for volleyball at Wright State University. She is recognized for her consistent academic achievements as an Honor Roll student and member of both the National Honor Society and Proviscope. Her volleyball accolades include GCAC Athlete of the Year, Team MVP, All-Conference honors, and selection to the IHSA 3A All-State First Team.

“PCHS has prepared me for college by making me work hard not only in the classroom, but also on the court,” Abbey said. “I have learned many values of discipline and hard work and truly know what it means to be a student-athlete.” She adds, “I would like to thank Coach Troy, Coach Seth, and Coach Lee for helping me accomplish my dreams! Faith is the root of success and God gave me the talent and gifts to play at the next level.”

Demi Carbone of Frankfort will attend Colby College as a volleyball player while majoring in Pre-Med with a minor in Business. Carbone has been an Honor Roll recipient throughout high school, active in National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, and served as Sacristan. On the court, she earned All-Conference honors twice along with Academic All-State recognition.

“The class load and amazing teachers have given me the confidence and knowledge I need to succeed at any level,” said Demi. “Providence was essential in making me the person I am today.” She adds “I would like to thank my father and mother, as well as Coach Lee, who recruited me to come to PCHS.”

Sammy Atkinson from Darien is set to play baseball at Heartland Community College with both athletic and academic scholarships. He has maintained Honor Roll status while participating in National Honor Society. Atkinson played four years in Providence’s baseball program, serving as team captain his senior year.

“PCHS has shown me how to succeed academically and athletically,” Sammy said. “Spirituality has played a huge role in my life at Providence. It bettered my relationships, increased my love for others, and taught me to always put my faith in God.” He added, “I would like to thank Coach Smith, all of my baseball coaches, my family, friends, and God for helping me get to this point.”

Landon Ehman of Frankfort will play baseball at Kankakee Community College on a full-ride scholarship after two years with Providence’s baseball team.

“Providence Catholic prepared me by helping me grow in discipline and become a better student and person overall,” said Landon. “I want to thank my parents, coaches, and teammates for all their support and encouragement.”

Sam Webb from Channahon has committed to play baseball at University of Wisconsin–Parkside where he plans on majoring in Psychology.

“PCHS has prepared me for college by showing me a similar workload that I will experience in college, which has prepared me for the day that I step on campus,” Sam said. “Providence has led me further down my path of spirituality and allowed me to continue to grow my faith and follow God.” He added, “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me along the way – my family, coaches, teammates, friends, and God.”

Angelina Cole from Mokena heads next fall to Western Michigan University with an athletic scholarship for softball while pursuing Occupational Therapy Assistant studies. She was named All-State three times as well as Team MVP; she also set school records for hits and RBIs.

“PCHS has prepared me for college because I have been able to take college prep courses which I fully believe will bring me a step ahead of the game when I get to college,” Angelina said. “Providence taught me how to be a good friend, how to be a leader...Most importantly...how to grow my faith with God...” She added thanks specifically for her various coaches: “Most importantly...thank you...to everyone who has helped me achieve my dream!” Angelina reflected further: “Spirituality has played a huge role in my life at PCHS...Providence has led me spiritually in the right direction...”

Alyssa Thulin from Shorewood is set for Lewis University where she’ll continue soccer on both academic/athletic scholarships while studying Nursing.

“Providence Catholic has taught me good study habits and helped me grow as both a student and an athlete,” Alyssa said. “I would like to thank my family, my teammates, and my coaches for all their support along the way.”

Landrie Callahan from Morris committed on a full-ride basketball scholarship at Pepperdine University; she plans studies in Education with Psychology minor.

“Providence has given me a better understanding of what college will be like,” Landrie said. “It has also shown me a broader aspect of how God is continuously involved in my life.” She thanked her parents plus coaching staff: “…for all their support…”

Cali Tierney from Tinley Park will play volleyball at Canisius University while studying Psychology with Business minor.

“Being a part of the Providence community has strengthened my character…dedication…perseverance…and integrity…” Cali expressed gratitude: “…thank God…my family…teammates…coaches…for supporting me…”

These students represent different sports including volleyball (Knight, Carbone,Tierney), baseball (Atkinson,Ehman/Webb), softball (Cole), soccer (Thulin), basketball (Callahan), committing across NCAA Divisions I-III plus junior colleges.
