Seniors Siena Adducci and Cole Hagwell have led a toy drive for Silver Cross Hospital, aiming to support children visiting the hospital’s emergency room. The initiative was motivated by their volunteer experiences at the hospital and a desire to help replenish its dwindling supply of toys.
Siena, who has volunteered at Silver Cross for an extended period, described her reasons for starting the drive: “I decided to do this drive because I am a volunteer at Silver Cross. As we were going through toys, we noticed that the Hospital’s stock was running low. I have seen how much of an impact the toys have on kids and I thought that more of them should get to experience some joy while in the hospital.”
She further explained her connection to Silver Cross: “The hospital relies on volunteers to help patients and it is a part of the community I live in.” Siena added, “It is important to me because I enjoy making other kids feel appreciated and being able to give them something that can help pass the time while in the ER. Working in the ER has shown me that a small act of kindness can have a huge impact on someone else’s life.”
Reflecting on her education, Siena noted: “The mission at Providence aligns with God’s mission for everyone and has inspired me to serve others whenever we can by helping those in need and giving back to our community.”
Cole, who also volunteers at Silver Cross, supported Siena’s perspective. He said, “The ER does a great job making children feel more comfortable by giving them a toy when they’re here. We noticed that the Hospital’s stock was running low and wanted to give back. Our hope is to take away the fear for the hospital that children often have and put a smile on their faces.”
He emphasized his motivation for service: “I feel that it’s important to give back to our community. Even the smallest toy can make a big difference for families going through hard times.” Cole also credited Providence Catholic High School’s values as an influence: “The core Augustinian values of Providence have taught us to serve our community. This is why I want to help.”
Their efforts highlight how students are putting into practice lessons about compassion and service learned during their time at Providence Catholic High School.
