Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 recently recognized almost 200 students during the Celebration of Biliteracy ceremony. The students were acknowledged for achieving either the Seal of Biliteracy or a Commendation toward the Seal. These awards highlight proficiency in English and a second language.
The event featured students demonstrating their language skills and two guest speakers, both Lincoln-Way graduates, who motivated the awardees to pursue further language study.
Laura Rycyna, Central World Language Department Chair, stated, “We are so proud of the students for achieving this prestigious award. It is a testament to their determination and willpower to step out of their comfort zone and learn a different language. Earning this award would not be possible without the incredible World Language and EL teachers we have at L-W, as well as in the junior highs. We are truly thankful for all the teachers who have inspired a love of language in their students and encouraged them to continue with their language studies.”
The Seal of Biliteracy confirms that students have achieved “Intermediate High” proficiency in two languages. Requirements include scoring 480+ on the English EBRW section of the SAT or a 21+ on the ACT, and obtaining a 4+ on the AP exam or an “Intermediate High” on the STAMP exam in the second language.
To earn a Commendation, students must meet the same English criteria, but achieve a 3+ on the AP exam or “Intermediate Low” on the STAMP exam for the second language. This recognition also extends to English Learner (EL) students who show proficiency in both English and their native language.
